There is a good discussion of this in the Satellite Experimenter's Handbook (I think that's what the book is called :-) that is published by the ARRL. I haven't tried it yet, but I've been sorely tempted. The winds on the Oregon coast are strong and steady. You can launch a kite and it will just hang there for hours. I like to listen to my Sony 2010 when we go to the beach, because the noise level is blissfully low and signals are strong. So I've thought a little QRP beach operating with a kite antenna would be neat. My friend Larry Mull (I've forgotten his call) observed some electric fence "wire" at a feed store that is really heavy string with a few filaments of copper woven in to make it conductive.
